Cradle

nounStandard termWoodworking

A wooden framework built to support the construction of vaulted ceilings, arches, or curved structures.

Carpenters build this temporary or permanent ribbing to define the shape of a curved architectural feature. In plasterwork, the cradle provides a solid, properly contoured backing for lath and plaster. In masonry or heavy timber work, it acts as falsework to hold pieces in alignment until the arch or vault can support its own weight.

Heard on the job

Build a sturdy cradle for the barrel vault so the plasterers have a true curve to work against.

Insider tip

Ensure the cradle is perfectly level and securely braced, as any deflection will translate directly into the finished ceiling.
