Cradling

nounStandard termWoodworking

A wooden framework built to support curved surfaces like arched ceilings.

Cradling consists of rough framing members shaped to form the backing for curved architectural features. Carpenters build this hidden skeleton in vaulted ceilings, coves, or arches to provide a solid nailing surface for lath, plaster, or decorative paneling.
