Weep

verbShop talkTribology

To leak very slowly, leaving a damp oil film around a seal or joint rather than actual drips.

Shop verb for a seal, gasket or fitting that leaks just enough to keep the surface wet and collect dust, without forming drips. Many lip seals weep slightly by design, since a thin oil film under the lip keeps it cool and alive. A weep gets logged and watched; once it starts dripping or the level needs regular topping off, it becomes a leak job.
