Water washout

nounStandard termTribology

Percentage of grease washed out of a running test bearing by a water jet, a measure of water resistance.

The ASTM D1264 test, in which a grease-packed ball bearing spins at 600 rpm for an hour under a jet of water at 38 C or 79 C, and the mass lost is reported as a percentage. Good water-resistant greases lose under 5 percent at 79 C. The related spray-off test, ASTM D4049, blasts grease off a plate. Buyers lean on both numbers when picking grease for wet-end paper machinery, washdown lines, marine and mining equipment.

Heard on the job
