Gassing

nounStandard termTextiles

A finishing process that burns off loose surface fibers from yarn or fabric.

A textile finishing operation where yarn or woven fabric is passed rapidly over a series of open gas flames. The heat singes away protruding microscopic fibers and fuzz without damaging the main body of the material. This leaves a smooth, lustrous surface and prevents the finished garment from pilling.
