Lead-out

nounStandard termShop Slang

The extra length of wire or cable left at the end of a run for making connections.

A deliberate excess of wire, cable, or piping left protruding from a conduit or wall box. This slack provides the necessary length to strip, terminate, and connect the line to a fixture or panel. Cutting it too short forces workers to splice extensions or pull an entirely new run.

Heard on the job

Leave at least a foot of lead-out at the junction box so the sparky has room to wire the relay.
