Lead out
Lead out turns up in 2 fields: printing, shop slang. Here is what it means to the people in each one.
Lead out in printing
To increase the vertical space between lines of metal type.
The traditional process of inserting thin metal strips between lines of set type to increase the vertical spacing. Compositors use these strips to fill a column to its exact required depth or to improve the readability of dense text blocks. In digital typesetting, this physical action translates to increasing the leading or line spacing values.
"Lead out that bottom paragraph by two points so the column aligns perfectly with the adjacent text."
Lead-out in shop slang
The extra length of wire or cable left at the end of a run for making connections.
A deliberate excess of wire, cable, or piping left protruding from a conduit or wall box. This slack provides the necessary length to strip, terminate, and connect the line to a fixture or panel. Cutting it too short forces workers to splice extensions or pull an entirely new run.
"Leave at least a foot of lead-out at the junction box so the sparky has room to wire the relay."
