Gunge

nounShop talkShop Slang

A thick, sticky buildup of grease, dirt, and degraded fluids on machinery.

Gunge is the dense, tar-like accumulation found on heavy equipment, engine blocks, and industrial components that have not been cleaned regularly. It forms when oil or coolant leaks mix with environmental dust and bake onto hot surfaces. Removing gunge is a mandatory first step in mechanical overhauls to expose fasteners and inspect for structural cracks.
