Home run

nounShop talkShop Slang

A continuous, unspliced run of wire or pipe from a central panel directly to an endpoint.

In construction and maintenance, a home run refers to a main utility line that travels directly from a distribution point to a specific room or device without branching off. Pulling a home run requires more material but isolates the circuit, making future troubleshooting much easier. The term is widely used by electricians, plumbers and network technicians.

We need to pull a home run from the basement server rack all the way to the manager's office.

Insider tip

Always label your home runs at the panel while pulling them, otherwise you will spend hours ringing them out later.
