Home run

nounStandard termElectricians

Part of a circuit running from the first box back to the panel, or the arrow on a drawing that shows it.

A home run is the section of a branch circuit from the panel to the first outlet or junction box. On electrical plans it is drawn as an arrow pointing toward the panel, labeled with the panel name and circuit number, with tick marks showing the conductors. Electricians tag home run cables at rough-in so trim goes smoothly, and a dedicated home run serves a single load such as a refrigerator or furnace.

Heard on the job

Label every home run with its circuit number at the panel end, I'm not ringing them out at trim.
