A tub is a panelboard enclosure without its interior: the steel back box with knockouts that is mounted and piped or cabled into during rough-in. The guts, the bus assembly that holds the breakers, and the dead front cover go in later, which keeps the costly parts away from drywall dust and damage. Some crews call it the can.
Set the tub flush between the studs at rough, the guts and cover stay in the trailer till after paint.
