Tub

Tub turns up in 2 fields: electricians, mining. Here is what it means to the people in each one.

Electricians' Slang

Tub in electricians

Empty panel enclosure, the steel back box that goes in at rough-in before the interior and cover arrive.

A tub is a panelboard enclosure without its interior: the steel back box with knockouts that is mounted and piped or cabled into during rough-in. The guts, the bus assembly that holds the breakers, and the dead front cover go in later, which keeps the costly parts away from drywall dust and damage. Some crews call it the can.

"Set the tub flush between the studs at rough, the guts and cover stay in the trailer till after paint."

Mining & Geology

Tub in mining

An open-topped container or small rail car used to hoist mined material up a shaft.

This transport vessel is loaded with broken rock or coal at the working face and moved to the shaft bottom, where it is hoisted directly to the surface. In older operations, it was a literal wooden bucket, while later mechanized mines used small steel rail cars that could be rolled right into the hoisting cage.

"We need three empty tubs sent down to the 400 level before the end of the shift."
