Gutter

nounShop talkElectricians

Sheet-metal trough with a removable cover used to splice, tap and route conductors next to panels and disconnects.

A gutter is a wireway or auxiliary gutter: a square steel trough, often 4 by 4 or 6 by 6 inches, with a hinged or screw cover, mounted beside switchboards, meter banks and disconnects to tap and splice conductors and route them between equipment. Code limits conductor fill to 20 percent of the cross section, and 75 percent at any point where splices are made. The wiring space inside a panel between the interior and the enclosure wall is also called the gutter.
