Dragbox

nounStandard termRailroad

A heavy structural casting at the rear of a locomotive frame that houses the coupling mechanism.

A massive, reinforced steel or iron casting built into the tail end of a locomotive frame. It provides a solid anchor point for the drawbar and coupling gear, distributing the immense pulling force of the trailing train across the locomotive chassis. If the dragbox cracks or fails, the locomotive loses its ability to pull tonnage safely.
