Dutch oven

nounShop talkRailroad

A protective cover shielding the electrical contacts on a transit car coupler.

A heavy mechanical cover or housing that drops down over the electrical contact pins on a transit or commuter rail coupler. It protects the sensitive electrical connections from weather, track debris, and arcing when the coupler is not mated to another car.

Heard on the job

The dutch oven is jammed open on the rear unit, so water is getting into the pins and causing a ground fault.
