A transverse rectangular support that holds the rails at the correct gauge.

A heavy rectangular block, made of creosote-treated wood or cast from prestressed concrete, laid perpendicular to the rails. They transfer the immense axle loads of passing trains into the ballast while holding the rails strictly to gauge.
