A heavy beam laid perpendicular to the rails to support and hold them in gauge.

A rectangular support member that distributes the immense weight of a train into the ballast below. Traditional ties are made from creosote-treated hardwood, though heavy-tonnage main lines use prestressed concrete ties with elastic clips to handle greater loads and require less maintenance.
