Diamond crossover

nounStandard termRailroad

A track arrangement allowing trains to cross between two parallel tracks in either direction.

A diamond crossover consists of four turnouts and a central diamond crossing superimposed on two parallel tracks. It allows a train traveling in either direction on either track to switch to the adjacent track within a very short distance. They are common in cramped passenger terminals and heavy commuter zones where space is at a premium.
