Dead section

nounStandard termRailroad

A segment of overhead wire or third rail that carries no electrical current.

An unpowered gap in the electrification infrastructure of a railway. It isolates different power grids or phases to prevent short circuits when a train pantograph or contact shoe bridges the gap. Engineers must coast through a dead section without drawing traction power.
