Errata

nounStandard termPrinting

A printed list of errors and their corrections inserted into a book after it has been bound.

An errata is a loose slip or a tipped-in page added to a finished book to correct mistakes discovered only after the main press run was completed. It lists the page number, the error, and the correct text. Publishers use errata slips as a last resort to fix critical errors without the massive expense of reprinting and rebinding the entire edition.

Heard on the job

We caught the misspelled author name too late, so we've to print an errata slip and tuck it into the front cover.

  • Cancel: An errata is an added list of mistakes, while a cancel involves physically cutting out the bad page and pasting in a newly printed replacement.
