Ennage

nounStandard termPrinting

The total count of en spaces in a piece of typeset copy.

Ennage is a method of measuring the length of a manuscript or typesetting job by calculating the total number of en spaces it contains. An en is a typographic unit half the width of an em. Typesetters and compositors used this count to estimate the time, effort, and cost required to set a specific block of text, as it provided a more accurate measure of work than a simple word count.
