Jackanapes

nounStandard termMining

A small guide pulley used to keep hoisting ropes aligned when lifting materials from a mine.

In historic mining operations, this small mechanical wheel was mounted in the headgear or shaft rigging to prevent the winding rope from wandering or rubbing against the shaft walls. It ensured a straight, true pull for buckets or cages being drawn up to the surface.

Heard on the job

The winding rope is slipping off the jackanapes again, so we need to realign the sheave wheel.
