Maundril

nounShop talkMining

A specialized, two-pronged hand pick used historically by miners for prying rock or coal.

A maundril is an older style of mining hand tool featuring a heavy head with two sharp prongs rather than a single point or a point-and-chisel combination. Miners used it to lever and pry fractured coal or soft rock away from the face after undercutting. It provided better leverage for breaking out blocky material than a standard pickaxe.

Hand me the maundril so I can pry this loose block out of the roof before we set the timber.
