A log is a weighted block or physical stop clamped near the free end of a mine hoist rope. It acts as a mechanical fail-safe to prevent the end of the rope from being accidentally pulled completely through the headframe sheave wheel if the conveyance is detached or over-wound.

Check the clamps on the log during the weekly rope inspection to make sure it hasn't slipped.
