Shot sample

nounStandard termMetallurgy

A granulated sample of metal created by pouring a small amount of the melt into cold water.

Assayers produce a shot sample by ladling a fraction of molten metal and dropping it into a bucket of water. The thermal shock shatters or freezes the metal into small, solid beads or flakes. This greatly increases the surface area of the metal, making it easy to weigh out precise amounts and dissolve them quickly in acids for chemical analysis.
