Bean-shot copper

nounStandard termMetallurgy

Copper that has been granulated into small pellets by pouring it into cold water.

Refined copper cast into small, bean-like nodules by pouring the molten metal directly into a tank of cold water. The rapid quench shatters the stream into easily handled pellets. Foundries prefer this granulated form over heavy ingots when they need to make precise weight additions for alloying.

Heard on the job

The brass recipe calls for exactly twelve kilos of bean-shot copper to hit the right alloy spec.
