A form of refined copper produced by pouring the liquid metal directly into a bath of cold water. The sudden cooling causes the copper to solidify into small, irregular pellets that roughly resemble beans. This high-surface-area form makes the copper easier to weigh, handle, and remelt for alloying purposes like making brass or bronze.
