Stabilizer

nounStandard termMechanical

A mechanical linkage or structural element used to resist unwanted motion or roll.

A component added to a mechanism or structure to increase its rigidity and prevent unwanted sway, vibration, or tipping. In vehicle suspensions, it usually takes the form of a torsion bar connecting opposite wheels to reduce body roll. In structural applications, it is a brace or guy wire that keeps tall or top-heavy assemblies upright under lateral loads.
