Belt track

nounStandard termMechanical

A continuous flexible band driven by wheels to propel a vehicle over soft or uneven ground.

A continuous, flexible loop of reinforced rubber or composite material used in place of wheels to distribute a vehicle's weight over a larger surface area. Driven by a sprocket and supported by idler wheels, it provides high traction and low ground pressure for heavy machinery operating in mud, snow, or loose soil. Unlike segmented steel tracks, these continuous belts allow for higher travel speeds and less damage to paved surfaces.

Heard on the job

The excavator threw its left belt track when the operator tried to pivot too sharply in the mud.
