Bracketry

nounShop talkMechanical

The collective assortment of brackets and mounting hardware in an assembly.

The secondary structural components designed solely to mount, support, or route primary systems like hoses, sensors, or subassemblies. In engineering departments, it often refers half-jokingly to the tedious but necessary design work required to attach everything securely to the main frame. Poor bracketry leads to vibration failures and maintenance headaches.

Heard on the job

The engine layout is finalized, but we still have a week of CAD work just to sort out the bracketry for the wire harnesses.

Insider tip

Novice designers often treat bracketry as an afterthought, leading to overly complex, hard-to-manufacture sheet metal parts.
