Explicit modeling

nounStandard termMechanical

A direct computer-aided design approach where geometry is created and modified without a history tree.

This CAD methodology allows users to push, pull, and manipulate surfaces and edges directly in 3D space. Unlike parametric design, it does not rely on a sequential list of features or mathematical constraints to define the shape. Engineers use this method for rapid conceptual design, altering imported geometry, or preparing complex models for finite element analysis.

Heard on the job

I had to use explicit modeling to fix the draft angles on the supplier's step file.

Also heard as

Do not mix it up with

  • Implicit modeling: Explicit modeling directly manipulates boundary geometry, while implicit modeling defines shapes using mathematical equations and fields.
