Escapement

nounStandard termMechanical

A mechanical linkage that controls the release of stored energy in discrete, regular steps.

This mechanism connects a motive force, like a mainspring or weight, to a timekeeping element such as a pendulum or balance wheel. It alternately blocks and releases the gear train, converting continuous rotational force into periodic impulses. This stepping action produces the familiar ticking sound in clocks and ensures precise control of rotational speed.

Heard on the job

The pallet fork in the escapement is worn down, causing the mechanism to skip under tension.
