Freewheel

verbStandard termMechanical

To continue rotating independently after the driving force stops or disengages.

When a driven component spins faster than its driving shaft, it overruns the connection and rotates freely. This prevents the load's momentum from back-driving the motor or engine. It requires a one-way clutch or ratcheting mechanism to decouple the input from the output.

Heard on the job

The motor cuts out at 3,000 RPM, but the flywheel will freewheel for another ten seconds.
