Lever

nounStandard termMechanical

A rigid bar resting on a pivot, used to multiply mechanical force.

A fundamental simple machine consisting of a rigid beam that rotates around a fixed hinge or fulcrum. By applying an input force at a distance from the fulcrum, it generates a proportional output force at another point, trading the distance moved for a multiplier in force. Engineers classify them into three classes based on the relative positions of the effort, load, and fulcrum.
