A measure of the turning effect of a force applied at a distance from a pivot point. It is calculated by multiplying the force magnitude by the perpendicular distance from the axis of rotation to the line of action of the force. In structural analysis, bending moments determine the required thickness of beams and shafts to prevent failure.
Heard on the job
Calculate the bending moment at the root of the cantilever beam before sizing the gusset.
Also heard as
- moment of force
Do not mix it up with
- Torque: Torque usually refers to a pure twisting force on a shaft, while a moment typically refers to a force causing bending in a structural member.
