Gusset

nounStandard termMechanical

A flat plate or bracket welded or bolted across a joint to reinforce it against bending and shear forces.

A structural reinforcement piece placed at the intersection of two structural members, usually at a right angle. It increases the load-bearing capacity of the joint by distributing stress over a larger area and preventing the members from flexing or tearing apart. They are standard elements in truss bridges, heavy equipment frames, and piping supports.
