Brittle fracture

nounStandard termMechanical

A sudden mechanical failure that occurs without prior yielding or plastic deformation.

The rapid propagation of cracks through a material under stress, resulting in a clean break with no visible stretching or bulging. It typically occurs in hard materials like glass, cast iron, or high-carbon steel, especially at low temperatures. The failure happens instantly and absorbs very little energy compared to a ductile failure.

The cold weather caused a brittle fracture in the crane hook right across the thickest section.
