The physical distortion of a material subjected to stress. It can be elastic, where the part returns to its original shape once the load is removed, or plastic, where the change is permanent. Engineers calculate this to ensure parts do not bend excessively or fail in service.

The FEA shows plastic deformation at the gusset root when the load exceeds 40 kilonewtons.
