Raw material manufactured to exact thickness tolerances, typically ranging from a few thousandths to a few hundredths of an inch. It is usually made of brass, steel, or color-coded plastic. Mechanics and fitters cut pieces from these sheets to create custom shims on the spot when standard pre-cut spacers do not fit the geometry of the machine base or bearing housing.
