Shimming

nounShop talkMechanical

The process of inserting thin spacers to adjust clearances or align components.

The act of placing thin pieces of material between mating parts to achieve a precise fit, correct angular misalignment, or set bearing preloads. It compensates for machining tolerances and wear in heavy machinery. Proper execution requires measuring the gap with gauges and selecting the exact combination of spacers to eliminate play without causing binding.
