Spring

verbStandard termMaritime

To pivot a vessel at anchor or alongside a dock using a tensioned mooring line.

Springing is a maneuver where the crew uses a specific mooring line, called a spring line, to pivot the ship in a tight space. By securing a line from the bow to a point aft on the dock, and applying engine power against it, the ship swings its opposite end out into the channel. It is a critical technique for departing from a crowded berth when the wind is pinning the vessel against the pier.

Always use a line with some stretch and ensure it is on a sturdy bollard before applying power.
