Spoke

nounStandard termMaritime

A projecting handle on the outer rim of a traditional ship's steering wheel.

A spoke is one of the wooden or metal handles projecting outward from the rim of a traditional ship's wheel. Helmsmen grip these extensions to apply leverage when turning the rudder against the heavy resistance of the water. On mechanical steering systems, the topmost spoke often features a distinct carving or wrapping to indicate when the rudder is perfectly centered.

Insider tip

The main upright spoke when the rudder is amidships is called the king spoke, usually marked with a physical notch or a Turks head knot so the helmsman can feel it in the dark.
