Waist

nounStandard termMaritime

The central, middle section of a ship's upper deck.

The waist is the midships area of the main deck, located between the raised forecastle at the bow and the quarterdeck at the stern. On historic sailing ships, this area was often lower than the ends of the ship and contained the main cargo hatches and space for handling heavy gear. It remains the widest part of the working deck.
