The steering apparatus used to control the rudder and alter the heading of a vessel.

The primary steering control on a vessel, connected mechanically, hydraulically, or electronically to the rudder. Some ships use large wooden wheels with extended spokes to provide manual leverage over heavy rudder chains. Other vessels feature a much smaller wheel linked to a hydraulic steering gear or autopilot system.
