Bill

nounStandard termMaritime

The sharp outer tip of an anchor's arm that digs into the seabed.

This is the extreme point of the fluke on a traditional anchor. Its primary function is to pierce the sand, mud, or rock of the ocean floor when the anchor is dragged along the bottom. A sharp, well-maintained tip ensures the anchor sets quickly and holds fast under the tension of the anchor chain.

Heard on the job

The anchor dragged because the bill was fouled with a heavy ball of kelp and couldn't bite into the mud.
