The forward-most section of a vessel's hull, designed to cleave the water and reduce resistance as the ship moves forward. The shape of the bow dictates how the ship handles waves, spray, and drag. Historically, the term also referred to an early navigational instrument, a crude wooden quadrant used to measure the altitude of the sun or stars.
