Sling

nounStandard termMaritime

A heavy strap, chain, or rope arrangement that supports the center of a yard.

A sling is a fixed suspension system made of heavy rope, chain, or iron bands that secures the midpoint of a yard to the mast. It bears the primary downward weight of the yard and its attached sail, transferring the load directly to the mast structure.
