The upper central timber of a composite mast or a spliced rope segment in rigging.

The central, upper structural timber in a built-up wooden mast that is composed of multiple interlocking pieces. In traditional rigging, it also refers to a short length of rope spliced into the upper section of standing backstays to provide a secure attachment point for blocks or tackles.
