Topsail

nounStandard termMaritime

The square sail rigged immediately above the lowest sail on a mast.

A primary driving sail on a square-rigged vessel, set on the topmast just above the lowest sail (the course). On later large sailing ships, this massive sail was often split into an upper and lower topsail to make it easier for smaller crews to handle in heavy winds.

Heard on the job

The wind is picking up, so send the hands aloft to reef the upper topsail.
