Snake

verbStandard termMaritime

To wrap a smaller line spirally around a larger rope to fill the grooves between strands.

Snaking is the process of winding a small cord or line tightly around the spiral grooves of a larger laid rope. This technique fills the hollows between the strands, creating a smoother outer surface. Riggers use it to protect the main rope from chafing and to prepare it for serving or parceling.

Heard on the job

We need to snake the new mainstay before we parcel and serve it.

Insider tip

The traditional rule of thumb for this process is worm and parcel with the lay, turn and serve the other way.
